Criminal Mischief in Greeley | I Know Airplane Bathrooms are Bad, but…

A man faces charges for Criminal Mischief after urinating on airplane seats.

Okay, I absolutely understand the aversion to airplane bathrooms. They are small and uncomfortable and it’s best to avoid them if possible. I do not, however, think the airplane seats are an appropriate substitute. I don’t think I am alone in this line of thinking, but one gentleman would disagree with me. Unfortunately for him, he ended up with criminal charges. Apparently, the man had been asleep during most of his flight and about 30 minutes before landing, he stood up and started urinating in between the seats, hitting the passengers in front of him. He then lost his balance and fell backwards resulting in the passengers next to him and some luggage being hit by his bodily fluid. He was arrested and charged with Criminal Mischief. He is lucky not be charged with Public Indecency.

It is pretty apparent that urine can cause damage to property and in a situation like the one above, the damage can really add up. Criminal Mischief in Weld, Morgan, and Logan County can be charged as a misdemeanor or felony depending on the total amount of damage caused:

Class of Crime

Aggregate Damage of all Property Harmed

Class 3 Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief Less than $300
Class 2 Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief $300 to $749
Class 1 Misdemeanor Criminal Mischief $750 to $999
Class 6 Felony Criminal Mischief $1,000 to $4,999
Class 5 Felony Criminal Mischief $5,000 to $19,999
Class 4 Felony Criminal Mischief $20,000 to $99,999
Class 3 Felony Criminal Mischief $100,000 to $999,999
Class 2 Felony Criminal Mischief $1,000,000 or more

In considering the man’s situation, they would add up the total damage to the seats, the floor, the luggage, clothing, and any other items the urine touched to decide what the felony or misdemeanor level to charge. Unfortunately, things add up fast and it only has to hit the $1,000 mark to become a felony offense.
