CU’s Concealed-Carry Weapon Restrictions

Changes have been to the policy at the University of Colorado regarding concealed carry permits and weapons that may affect Weld County students attending either the Boulder campus or Colorado Springs campus. The University of Colorado (CU) has announced that students who attend the Boulder and Colorado Springs campuses, are over 21, have a concealed-carry permit, and choose to carry the firearm, will be segregated into separate dorm rooms.  No guns will be allowed in any of the regular dorms at the University of Colorado regardless of whether the student has a permit or not. This will affect students living in cities like Greeley, Hudson, or Berthoud who are conscious of their second amendment rights and wish to attend CU.

The Board of Regents at the University of Colorado, long time opponents to the 2nd Amendment, also imposed new provisions to the old law regarding attending sporting events on campus with a legal concealed weapon. Students are no longer allowed to bring any firearms or other concealed weapons to any sporting events. Lawyers are questioning the constitutional validity of this legislation. If there were to be a tragedy like the one experienced in Aurora, people may be in a position to sue.  The Board of Regents has stripped citizens of their second amendment rights. Now, it can be argued that CU has they are then assumed the role of protector, and, they fail to do so, they are liable for any harm which might have been preventable by legal firearm possession.

With this recent legislation regarding gun rights and the second amendment right to bear arms, it is even more important to be aware of law changes which try to restrict your right to bear arms. Police will still arrest and a District Attorney will still prosecute you even if you did not know the law changed. If contacted by police about a gun or concealed-carry weapon charge, be smart, exercise your right to remain silent, and contact the experienced criminal defense attorneys at the O’Malley Law office at 970-616-6009.
