People are fearful. And, when people are fearful, they make decisions which aren’t based in reality. School shootings are a reality, especially in Colorado. But, the way school authorities and the general public responds is often without common sense. For example, a high school student shouldn’t be arrested for bringing a toy gun to school. Yet, this happened in a Greeley school in Weld County. Let’s look closer at this story and discuss firearm rights and how they’re being infringed across Colorado.

Do Airsoft Guns Pose a Threat to Weld County Schools?

According to the news source, a 16-year-old boy was “found with an Airsoft lookalike handgun” at school. A resource officer noticed the boy had something stashed in his jeans, and after a search, the Airsoft gun was found. He was immediately arrested and the gun was confiscated. A school official stated “any child contemplating bringing a gun, or a facsimile gun to school really needs to think again. That was a very dangerous situation. The gun that child brought to school looked like a real gun, and it created a safety issue for him and really for all of the students.” Now, let’s look closer at what this woman is saying, because she makes our point for us.

  • “That was a very dangerous situation. The gun…looked like a real gun.”

The gun looked like a real gun, but it wasn’t a real gun. How then does it pose a threat? No one can be truly harmed from an Airsoft gun. While it’s important to wear protective gear when playing a game, it is not an inherently dangerous item, and certainly not a deadly weapon.

  • The gun “created a safety issue for him and really for all of the students.”

Part of this woman’s statement is true – if teachers were allowed to carry a concealed firearm on school property to protect students, the young man with the toy gun could have been in danger if a teacher thought he had a real gun. But, since there are no firearms on school property, there really was no “safety issues” related to carrying an Airsoft gun on school property.

A toy gun is not a deadly weapon.

Fear Confuses the Real Issue When it Comes to Gun Control

Gun control proponents miss the real issue when they arrest young people for carrying toy guns at school. They are so focused on the means of carrying out violence rather than the reason for the violence. Our culture’s teenagers are hopeless – they have been raised in a world without right and wrong, where an evolutionary mindset creates a dog-eat-dog atmosphere. This is the reason for the increase in school shootings, not guns. And, especially not toy guns. By arresting the young man, they are illustrating their overreaction to the insignificant issues when it comes to guns. This young man will have an arrest on his record – and the school didn’t protect anyone.

Firearm Rights are Infringed in Colorado: Why You Need a Lawyer

Another practical example of gun rights abuse is when sheriffs in Morgan, Logan, and Phillips County deny people their right to carry a concealed weapon. Obtaining a CCW can be a difficult process. If your CCW permit has been denied, contact one of our aggressive criminal defense lawyers. We firmly believe in the 2nd Amendment and your right to own guns to protect your family. When law abiding citizens carry weapons, our society is safer.

Gun rights are infringed on a daily basis – even high school students are arrested for bringing a toy gun to school.
