Weld County Forensic Crime Lab

Weld County is getting a new 4 million dollar crime lab. This crime lab will service Weld County and the major cities of Greeley and Loveland and some cities of Larimer County including Fort Collins. The Weld County Sheriff’s department says it will better help them prosecute people they suspect may have committed crimes like Burglary (CRS 18-4-202), Sexual Assault (CRS 18-3-402), or Murder (CRS 18-3-102).

This new lab will impact law enforcements efforts in surrounding cities like Erie, Eaton, and Berthoud positively. With DNA testing readily available, police will identify suspects more quickly and accurately. The resources the crime lab provides will clear innocent people by sophisticated testing. It will also keep people from the uncertainty of a possible criminal case because they will be able to process evidence like DNA much more quickly. Right now, all DNA and other forensic testing must be done through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. That process can take as long as 18 months to complete.

With ground breaking on this new crime lab, Weld County and Larimer County will be able to clear innocent people quickly of crimes and with more certainty than before. Having a sophisticated crime lab as a near resource will be beneficial to residents in the Weld County area.
