Don’t Take Shortcuts and Face Criminal Charges: A Message for UNC Graduates

Read 5 tips for college graduates in Colorado on how to avoid criminal charges.

The month of May is filled with celebration for many University of Northern Colorado graduates in Greeley, Colorado. If you graduated from college this year, I want to say congratulations! I’m sure you have heard many words of advice and bits of wisdom. As an experienced criminal defense attorney in Weld, Morgan, and Logan County, I have represented countless college students or recent graduates who have been charged with a crime. The real world after college offers many opportunities. These opportunities are both good and bad. Here are my tips for avoiding a criminal charge:

1. Keep Good Company

If you hang out with people who are a positive impact on your life, you’ll have a better chance at success. If, however, your friends are partiers who smoke pot and drink heavily, you will slowly get caught up in their behavior. People who struggle with alcohol and drugs have a hard time getting and keeping jobs and are much more likely to be charged with crimes like Criminal Mischief and Disorderly Conduct. Don’t keep bad company – surround yourself with positive people.

2. Alcohol and Drugs Aren’t a Good Outlet

If you need to let off steam and relax, don’t turn to drugs or alcohol. These things may offer short-term relief but can lead to an addiction which kills your ambition. Heavy drinkers and partiers sleep late and have a hard time holding a steady job. Plus, alcohol and drugs impair your judgment – you are much more likely to be charged with a DUI or Resisting Arrest if you are intoxicated. Turn instead to the outdoors and exercise to relax.

3. Success Takes Hard Work – There are No Shortcuts

Doing things the hard way (the way that takes patience) will get you success in the end. Taking shortcuts only results in criminal charges like Theft. Dishonest gain will follow you for the rest of your life – so don’t cheat, steal, lie, or embezzle to get ahead in life. Don’t lose heart if you can’t find the best job right out of college – your parents worked many years for their home and car. Hard-earned success lasts forever, while dishonest gain will only result in criminal charges which ruin your future.

4. Invest in Good People – Not Things

Don’t get caught up in the lie that things and stuff will bring you happiness. This simply isn’t the truth. People and good relationships will bring you the most joy in life. If you work all the time to make money so that you can have things, you won’t have meaningful relationships. You are more likely to turn to drugs and alcohol and shortcuts to get what you want. Build relationships that will stand the test of time.

5. Sex Creates Bonds – It Isn’t Free

Sexual relationships are serious. There is no such thing as “casual sex.” This goes beyond the possibility of contracting an STD. When two people are involved in a sexual relationship, a special bond occurs. You may think you’re not getting attached, but then lose it and attack the man who had an affair with your girlfriend. One-night stands aren’t free – if the woman regrets her decision the next morning, she can falsely accuse you of Sexual Assault. You could go to prison for the rest of your life because of a “casual” sexual relationship. Set yourself up for a good future – save sex for marriage and avoid criminal charges and heartache.
